Case Study: Developing the Grill Builder

A growing, regional, custom outdoor kitchen manufacturer and installer needed a tool to allow both their customers and salespeople to easily view and choose the different options from their catalog of outdoor kitchens, bars, and accessories. This system needed to look great, be easy to use, and extensible so it could grow along with the business and product lines. The team also wanted to be able to provide discount codes, manage the mix and match options based on build types, and print or send the completed build to their sales team from the website.

Aries Consulting Group was brought in to complete the implementation. The system was built on PHP and an off the shelf PHP based calculator designed to help developers build storefronts. This system stores all of the pricing data, including the different grill and bar types and the mix and match accessories. Customers are able to pick their base bar or grill system, then add on from there and see how adding and removing options affects both the look and price of the finished kitchen.

Options are categorized for easy reading, and the images update as bar and grill systems are changed. The system provides visual feedback so it’s easy to see what was selected and the running total shows how it affects the final price. The system itself is just a form, with a bunch of custom CSS and Javascript, and a little bit of custom PHP, blending together seamlessly to work flawlessly on mobile phones, tablets, and desktop computers. Underneath, a standard html form, molded and shaped into a menu, that is easy to select options via mouse or touch. Each subset hides a set of checkboxes or radio buttons, that drive the underlying form data. As options are chosen, the updated price is reflected on the bottom. A little bit of custom javascript helps everything run smooth, and drives the secure email form that pops up when the customer is ready to send their configuration to the nearest showroom.

This custom system has been in service for years and helped hundreds of customers configure the outdoor kitchen, bar, or grill of their dreams. As the client expands, we’ve expanded the offerings, and are able to quickly update the forms to add new items, update prices, or change discounts and codes.
